By: Gary Graham, who has been The Spokesman-Review's managing editor for five years, has been named editor of the newspaper.
The veteran journalist succeeds Steven A. Smith, who resigned last week after the media company announced significant newsroom layoffs.
Word of Graham's selection was posted late Tuesday afternoon on the newspaper's Web site.
Publisher W. Stacey Cowles said last week that the newspaper had suffered the same economic woes that have beset the rest of the industry in recent years. As a result, the paper planned to cut an additional 60 jobs, including 25 in the newsroom.
Cowles said that will leave a total of 470 workers at the newspaper by next year.
