'SqueezeOC' Shuts Print Tab

By: E&P Staff SqueezeOC, the weekly tab aimed at affluent young adults from Freedom Orange County Information, is shuttering its paper edition at the end of the month and will become an online-only product.

In a statement Chris Schulz, vice president of Freedom Specialty Media said, "This shift to offering an online only product reflects the original mission of SqueezeOC, and will allow us to serve our audience of active young professionals in their preferred method of communication."

As a result in the shift of focus -- as a destination for young professionals looking for place to go and stuff to do -- some positions will be eliminated.

SqueezeOC has experienced some hiccups since it first launched more than 18 months ago. It was intended to be a Web-centric product that with a weekly print edition serving as a promotional vehicle.

In a May interview with E&P's Mark Fitzgerald, Schulz said, "Strategically and tactically, I think we did Squeeze OC a little wrong. We haven't been able to monetize the Web."

Schulz also acknowledged the tab was not sufficiently differentiated from the strong local alt-weekly. "We wanted it to be OC Weekly - minus the hooker ads," Schulz told E&P in May.
