Squirrel's Power Trip Delays, Shrinks Binghamton, N.Y., Daily

By: E&P Staff Readers of the Press & Sun-Bulletin, Binghamton, N.Y., have a wayward squirrel to blame for the paper's late delivery and skimpy size yesterday morning.

On Wednesday morning around 8:45, a nut-loving creature climbed into a New York State Electric and Gas substation, blowing the power, the paper reported yesterday.

Power was knocked out for more than 11 hours at the Gannett Central New York Production facility, which prints papers for Binghamton, Elmira and Ithaca, according to WSTM.com, an NBC station in Johnson City, N.Y., site of the new Gannett plant.

Calls placed to the production facility and the Press & Sun-Bulletin were not immediately returned.

A spokesperson for the utility company told reporter Bob Joseph at WNBF radio in Binghamton that it's been "a long time since we've had squirrel issues."

Although power was restored in early evening, and printing ordinarily begins shortly before midnight -- with the Press & Sun-Bulletin, largest of the three dailies, the last to go on press -- prepress may have been affected. The plant's servers hold page files sent from the three dailies, which also transmit display ads in early evening for preflighting at the plant. Also, high-resolution files of news photos are passed to a separate imaging center.
