By: Joe Strupp The St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times has named Tim Nickens as editor of editorials. He succeeds Phil Gailey, who will retire at the end of August after 20 years, the paper said in a release.

"Since joining the Times in 1983 as a city reporter, Nickens has distinguished himself in various assignments including statehouse reporter, political editor and metro editor," the release added. "During the 1990?s, Nickens had a five-year stint with the Miami Herald. Most recently, he has served as deputy editor of the Times editorial pages."

Nickens, 49, has a journalism degree from Indiana University.

"During this age of explosive growth in opinion and commentary, the editorial voice of the St. Petersburg Times still rings with singular clarity," Paul Tash, editor and chairman of the paper, said in a statement. "Tim will prove an outstanding steward of that voice and an advocate for our values."
