By: E&P Staff Boyzell Hosey, the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times interim photo director since August, was named formally to the position, the newspaper announced Friday.
Hosey, 41, previously supervised Times photo staffs in Clearwater and Tampa. He had been interim photo director since the
resignation of Sue Morrow, who left to become the deputy director of photography at the Sacramento Bee. In his position, he supervises a staff of 46 photographers, photo editors, and technicians.
"In recent months we've seen him at his best," the paper quoted Managing Editor Stephen Buckley as saying when he announced the appointment to the staff on Jan. 13.
He credited Hosey with "drawing great work out of the photo staff during big stories such as Hurricane Katrina," and said his leadership played a major role in helping the staff win nine awards at the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar.
A native of Pennsylvania, Hosey studied at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and Ohio University, and worked at The State newspaper in Columbia, S.C., before joining the Times in 1988 as a photographer and editor.
