'St. Pete Times' Runs Front-Page Correction On Media Columnist's O'Reilly Mistake

Posted
By: Joe Strupp The St. Petersburg Times today published a front-page correction after Columnist Eric Deggans wrongly stated in a Sunday column that Fox News host Bill O'Reilly had accused President Obama of racism.

The correction, printed along the left column, stated: "Bill O'Reilly has not accused Barack Obama of racism. An article in Sunday's Perspective section about the National Association of Black Journalists incorrectly included the Fox newscaster in a list of commentators who have publicly accused the president of racism."

On his blog, The Feed, Deggans himself offered up a mea culpa Tuesday, writing: "One serving of humble pie, coming right up."

He later added: "While O'Reilly has been tough on President Obama about many issues, he hasn't called the president a racist in the way pundits such as Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck have.

"You may recall I recently predicted jinxing myself after writing about another TV critic who had lots of accuracy problems. Truth is, we're all human, and part of being a fair journalist is admitting when you've made an error. Sure hope the jinx is over now."

The original Deggans column, which has been updated to note the correction, is here.
