By: E&P Staff London-based Express Newspapers has picked the St. Petersburg Times as the first U.S. printer of its Daily Express tabloid.
Under the one-year contract that began Nov. 28, the Times will print 5,000 copies of the paper daily, "with expectations to increase that amount as circulation builds to 10,000 copies daily," the Times said in its announcement. The Daily Express is already printed in Spain, Greece, Belgium, and France to reach British tourists in Europe.
Bob Nuttall, director of circulation and distribution for Express Newspapers, said the paper "will expand aggressively over the next year to tap into the growing English tourist market that continues to flourish in Florida." He said Express expects "to continue doing business with the Times for many years to come."
Joe DeLuca, director of operations for the Times, noted that the paper already prints the Florida edition of the New York Post. "Our experience ... has shown us we have the skills and capacity to deliver a top quality product, generate some additional revenue for the Times and not impact any deadlines for our own editions," he said in a statement.
The Times said copies of the paper will be trucked to outlets in the Orlando, Miami, Sarasota, Ft. Myers, and Naples areas by a Daily Express vendor. Limited numbers will also be flown to San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York.
The Times said it will manage distribution of the Daily Express in the Tampa Bay market beginning in January 2005.
