For Montrealers and newspaper business followers, the news Wednesday that French language daily La Presse would roll back to only one print edition a week wasn’t the big surprise. The stunner was how soon print’s sunset had actually arrived.
La Presse+, the $36 million tablet app on which the 131-year-old paper had predicated its future, debuted in April 2013, and its leadership hasn’t been shy about hinting at a print run end since then, particularly when renegotiating its contract with printer Transcontinental in February 2014.
