By: E&P Staff The Star Tribune in Minneapolis/St. Paul announced the promotion of two editors today. Rene Sanchez is the new managing editor/news, having previously worked as deputy managing editor/content. Cory Powell has been promoted to managing editor for presentation and innovation, from deputy managing editor/visual journalism.
Sanchez began his career at the Times-Picayune in New Orleans, where he worked in several positions including prep sports writer and police and general assignment writer. He left New Orleans to become a night police reporter for The Washington Post. While there he rose to work on the Post?s National Staff, covering education and news around the country, focusing on California and the West for his final six years at the Post.
As managing editor for news, Sanchez will oversee the news departments, the daily news report, and newsroom enterprise. He will share responsibility for investigations and projects with Editor/Senior Vice President Nancy Barnes.
Powell joined the Star Tribune in 2003, where he was part of the paper's redesign effort, helped launch the Vita.mn tab, and worked to implement zoning. Prior, he had worked at the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer for 10 years, ending his stint there as design director. During his career he has also worked as a copy editor, copy desk chief, and news editor.
Powell?s new responsibilities include managing the design desk, the copy desk, photography and graphics, and newsroom operations. He will also represent the newsroom in circulation and press issues, as well as work on new product innovation with other departments.
