'Star Tribune,' Printer's Union Strike a Deal

By: A top labor union official says The Star Tribune of Minneapolis and its printer's union have reached a deal to avoid the termination of a labor contract covering 116 pressmen.

George Osgood says the two sides agreed on new terms just before 8 a.m. Friday morning, after an all-night bargaining session. He said the new terms would not be made public before union members had voted.

Talks resumed after the second day of a three-day hearing to seek permission to abandon the contract. Osgood says the judge had indicated he would be forced to rule in the company's favor if the two sides did not reach a deal.

The nation's 15th-largest newspaper filed for bankruptcy protection in January under a heavy burden of debt.
