Irvine, Calif., October 27, 2011 — Editor & Publisher Magazine announced today that it has selected Mike Klingensmith, publisher and CEO of Star Tribune Media Co. in Minneapolis, as Publisher of the Year for 2011.
Each year
E&P recognizes a publisher who has demonstrated sound business acuity, visionary leadership, innovative problem-solving, and, most importantly, measurable results.
Klingensmith was selected from a broad field of more than 100 nominations submitted from newspapers around the globe. Candidates were evaluated based on a number of criteria, including quality of content, diversity of product offerings, digital innovations, management style, and vision for the future of the newspaper industry.
In his two years as publisher, Klingensmith has guided the post-bankruptcy
Star Tribune to consecutive periods of increased circulation, launched digital initiatives to increase revenue from paid subscriptions, and even handed out profit-sharing checks to all full-time employees.
Klingensmith logged a 30+ year career at Time, Inc. before taking the reins at the Minneapolis
Star Tribune. "I'm a fan of the Twin Cities, which is my hometown," Klingensmith said. "So the challenge of restoring health and building a future for my hometown newspaper seemed like a great opportunity and a very worthwhile goal."
