Star Tribune Skips $9M Debt Payment

Posted
By: The chairman of the Star Tribune says the newspaper skipped a $9 million quarterly debt repayment to senior creditors in an effort to save cash while trying to restructure.

Chairman Christopher Harte says all options - including bankruptcy filing - are on the table as the newspaper negotiates with lenders.

Harte says the newspaper still makes money. But it has a $432 million debt.

Clint Cutler is a bankruptcy attorney who says the Star Tribune's decision doesn't necessarily mean bankruptcy is inevitable.

Cutler says the typical next step would be to try to negotiate with lenders so loans fit in with existing and projected cash flow.

The newspaper defaulted on its loan agreements earlier this year. And in June, it stopped making payments to its junior lenders.
