The State Journal-Register in Springfield, Ill., will keep some articles in its print newspaper off its Web site starting June 30.

In a note to readers, SJ-R Executive Editor Jon K. Broadbooks said some articles will be labeled “First in Print” in the physical newspaper. Website users who want to see an article designated First  in Print “will be directed to a list of single-copy sales locations and an area to subscribe to the print or electronic editions of the newspaper,” he wrote.

Broadbooks did not say how long the embargo would last on First in Print stories.

“The change is a watershed moment for the SJ-R because this means the newspaper’s website and print editions will evolve differently,” Broadbooks added. The Website -- which will remain free -- will focus on breaking news while the print edition will increasingly offer unique content. “We’ll place a premium on depth reporting that goes beyond the breaking news, and we’ll also feature some community news that other media entities either cannot or will not provide,” the executive editor wrote.

“With these changes we have a chance to make sure that print readers — who pay for the privilege of reading the paper — get extra for their investment. We also have a chance to underscore the point that print is far from dead,” he added.

Broadbooks said the site gets more than 5 million page views monthly.
