By: The South Carolina Supreme Court says the Charleston City Paper defamed a former children's guardian by publishing false allegations about her.
Linda Erickson sued Jones Street Publishers about a story in 2000 that discussed the guardian ad litem system, which assigns people to represent the interests of children in court.
Erickson was not named in the article. Her attorney says it was accepted in court that she was the person who was the focus of the article.
The Supreme Court says the newspaper made several mistakes, including failing to check on the reliability of the charges against Erickson.
Neither the publisher nor the newspaper's attorney returned a phone call this morning to The Associated Press. The justices ordered that a jury decide on damages.
