States Newsroom launches dynamic site for state capital news

Posted

On Dec. 6, States Newsroom, the nation’s leading network of state-based nonprofit news outlets, announced it will bring all of its coverage together in one place and launch News from the States, a comprehensive source for statehouse news across the country. In the next two and a half years, the organization will expand to newsrooms in roughly 40 states with content sharing agreements in the remaining states.

“It’s time to stop treating news as just a business and start to treat it also as a public service, a public good,” said Chris Fitzsimon, director and publisher of States Newsroom. “That’s how we’ve thought of States Newsroom since we began in 2017. We’re proud to have newsrooms in 25 states and counting, as well as a Washington, D.C. bureau.”

News from the States and all 25 States Newsroom affiliates and partners provide daily statehouse news coverage and in-depth investigative reporting free of charge to readers across the country. Unlike existing for-profit and nonprofit journalism sites, the entities do not charge readers for content, run advertisements or charge other outlets to publish their coverage.

“Research shows that not only do newspaper closures cost taxpayers, they also erode civic engagement, voter turnout and competition in local elections,” said Fitzsimon. “We need experienced local journalists to hold government officials accountable, cover policy debates and tell stories that would otherwise go uncovered. With News from the States we will bring all of that coverage together in one place for the first time.”

In the last four years, States Newsroom has helped fill the void left by the closure of many legacy media outlets by establishing locally operated newsrooms in 25 states. Each newsroom is run by a veteran local journalist with deep knowledge of the state’s political history and media landscape and has complete editorial independence over the coverage. The organization has continued to grow and cover important stories during a tumultuous time when decisions made at the state level have had a profound impact on every American, in areas such as voting access, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, manufactured controversy around critical race theory and more.

States Newsroom is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is funded exclusively by the generous contributions of readers and philanthropists. States Newsroom is committed to supporting fact-based, non-partisan news to the public at no cost and ad-free.
