States to Mark Columnists Day

Posted
By: Dave Astor A number of governors have proclaimed April 18 as National Columnists Day in their states.

National Society of Newspaper Columnists board member Robert Haught said the governors acted on the request of the NSNC, which established the day in 1995. April 18 is when Ernie Pyle was killed in 1945 while writing from the front lines of World War II.

Governors making the proclamation include Jennifer Granholm of Michigan and Michael Easley of North Carolina. The proclamation reads, in part: "Whereas columnists are a vital part of every newspaper, making significant contributions to the journalism profession in general...."

The NSNC, founded in 1977, will hold its annual conference June 11-13 in New Orleans.
