By: E&P Staff Last Thursday, Steve Silberman was named publisher of the Statesman-Journal in Salem, Ore., as well as publisher of the Appeal Tribune in neighboring Silverton, and of the Stayton Mail.

Dreams do come true," Silberman told the Statesman-Journal. "I had dreamed of working here in Salem even before I ever thought about being a publisher. Salem was always at the top of my list."

Silberman had previously served as executive editor of the Palm Springs Desert Sun since 2002. In Salem, Silberman will replace Brian Priester, who accepted the publisher's job at the Lansing (Mich.) State Journal July 8.

"Steve is a wonderful human being and a strategic thinker," said Laura Hollingsworth, president of Gannett's West Group and publisher of the Des Moines Register to the Statesman Journal. "He knows what he is doing in this business."

Prior to his time in Palm Springs, Silberman was the managing editor at the Idaho Statesman in Boise, a news team leader supervising 15 editors, reporters and photographers at the Orange County Register and a reporter at The Record in Hackensack, N.J. He broke into the newspaper business in 1984 as a reporter for the Commercial Appeal in Memphis.

A New York native, Silberman graduated from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and acheived a masters in journalism from Columbia University.
