Staunton 'News Leader' Trims Staff

Posted
By: The News Leader has laid off 10 employees and eliminated five vacant positions.

The Staunton newspaper announced Tuesday's cuts in a story published Wednesday. After the cuts, The News Leader will have 83 employees, including about 20 part-time workers.

The newspaper said the cuts are part of a work force reduction announced in October by the News Leader's parent company, McLean-based Gannett Co. (nyse: GCI - news - people )

Publisher Roger Watson said the cuts are a byproduct of the economic downturn. He said declining ad revenues and a downturn in major retail accounts were factors in Gannett's decision.
