By: E&P Staff and The Associated Press Comic Stephen Colbert of Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" apologized to the residents of Canton for calling the town "North Dakota's dirty ashtray" -- even though he got some backing in a local paper -- and has shifted his target south.
On Tuesday's show, Colbert officially apologized, claiming he didn't expect comments that town residents made to the Argus Leader newspaper.
"You can go bowling. You can go to the pool. That's about it," said Tracy Farnsworth, 15, about Canton.
A Web designer had some fun with the insult to Canton, creating an online game where visitors could fling pheasants at Colbert.
"Come on guys, Canton, South Dakota, is great," Colbert said.
"At least you're not an incorporated outhouse like Canton, Texas."
