Stephen Colbert 'Cites' E&P -- Democrats Deny Him Place on Ballot Anyway

Posted
By: E&P Staff On his Comedy Central show Thursday night, Stephen Colbert was reduced to citing a recent article in E&P to prove that he was, indeed, not merely a joke candidate for president.

Thursday was the day the Democratic party in South Carolina would decide if Colbert, who announced his favorite son candidacy last month and filed to run in that state's primary, would qualify for the ballot. The party rules require that he be viewed as a "viable" candidate.

Colbert noted this at the opening of The Colbert Report, then to prove that he was indeed all of that, put up on the screen a graphic of a recent E&P article covering his surprisingly decent showing in a national poll, complete with large Editor & Publisher logo. The audience was shocked into silence by the idea of E&P as kingmaker.

He said he had also toned down his Ronald Reagan tattoo.

However, in the second segment of the show, he revealed that the Democrats had foolishly denied him a place on the ballot, even though he had gotten state party leaders drunk and fed them Doritos (his campaign's corporate sponsor)during his trip to the state last weekend.

Too bad for them, he said, displaying a thick file of papers -- he had an exit strategy for Iraq all mapped out.

But at least, he hinted, he could now change the "Democratic ringtone" on his cell phone -- Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women" with the refrain "everybody must get stoned."
