Speaking at the D8 conference in an interview with The Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher, Apple Chairman Steve Jobs declared he wanted to help save the newspaper business. His advice, AllThingsD's Peter Kafka reports: Price aggressively and go for volume on mobile apps.

"I don’t want to see us descend into a nation of bloggers myself. I think we need editorial more than ever," Jobs said. Read the entire post here.

Here’s the video, posted on All Things Digital, in which Jobs addresses the iPad’s role in journalism.  His big applause line: “I think we need editorial more than ever right now.”

Jobs added: “Anything that we can do to help the New York Times, The Washington Post and other newsgathering organizations find new ways of expression so they can afford to get paid so they can keep their news gathering and editorial operations intact, I’m all for it.”

People “are willing to pay for content” that is priced right, Jobs said. That is, priced “aggressively,” on the cheap side -- not the premium aggressive pricing newspapers are increasingly getting from print subscribers.
