Still Tall and Tan and Young and Lovely? 'NYT' Flubs Overweight-Brazilians Photo

By: E&P Staff Brazilians are angry with The New York Times for an article about a government study that reported more than 40% of Brazilians are overweight. But the real insult? The accompanying photograph, which incorrectly identified three overweight, bikini-clad Czech tourists as Brazilians, the newspaper Globo reported.

"Certainly I am not a girl from Ipanema. I am a woman of a certain age," Milena Suchoparkova, 59, told Globo. Suchoparkova was one of the women captured sunning herself on Rio de Janeiro's Ipanema Beach in John Maier's photograph.

Globo, one of Brazil's largest daily newspapers, questioned the Times' credibility and disputed the Jan. 13 report by correspondent Larry Rohter. Globo ran its story under the headline "New York Times Screw-up."

The Times ran an editor's note today, writing it "regretted that the nationalities of the women in the photo were not verified." Brazil, which prides itself on its national image, has taken issue with Times stories before. Last May, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva demanded Rohter's visa be canceled after he wrote a story that Brazilians were concerned by the president's drinking habits.
