By: E&P Staff "Stone Soup" cartoonist Jan Eliot will be among 25 female volunteers constructing a house for a single mother this Saturday in Middle Island, N.Y., as part of Habitat for Humanity's Women Build program.
"I'll be following in my comic strip characters' footsteps," said Eliot, a former single mother who, in March 2004, had her Holly and Alix characters help at a construction site during a visit to their aunt in California. Soon, the grandmother in "Stone Soup" will travel to Africa to help build housing there.
Following the construction work Saturday, Eliot and Habitat representatives will speak at the Borders bookstore in Bohemia, N.Y. The cartoonist will sign copies of her "Not So Picture Perfect" comic collection at the fund-raising event.
Women Build and Eliot -- whose feature is distributed by Universal Press Syndicate -- plan to collaborate on future projects.
