Story Focuses on Scarcity of Gay Characters in Comics That Run in Daily Papers

Posted
By: E&P Staff A story about the scarcity of gay characters in daily-newspaper comics has been posted by AfterElton.com.

The piece notes that only a handful of comics offered by major syndicate have even a supporting character who's gay. Some of the few exceptions including "For Better or For Worse" by Lynn Johnston of Universal Press Syndicate, "Doonesbury" by Garry Trudeau of Universal, and "9 Chickweed Lane" by Brooke McEldowney of United Media.

Among the reasons for the almost-entirely heterosexual nature of daily comics, says the article, are the conservatism of many newspapers and the (erroneous) perception that the funny pages are mostly for kids.

Brent Hartinger's article can be seen here. E&P has also written in the past about the scarcity of gay-oriented comics in mainstream syndication.

AfterElton.com is planning a future article on gay-related content in webcomics, which can have less restrictive content than strips in daily papers.
