By: Jennifer Saba After shutting the doors on its weekly youth tab StreetMiami yesterday, The Miami Herald offered all 15 employees jobs within the company. Brett O'Bourke, the former editor of the Street, said that most of the staffers accepted positions; those that did not received a ?nice? severance package. He did not have a final count of those that decided to stay on board.
?We work in a news building; there's no such thing as a well-kept secret," O'Bourke said when asked if he was surprised by the closing. "The business had been struggling for a while, and being the No. 2 alternative paper in the market is not a good place to be.?
The Street, founded in October 1999, was Knight Ridder's second-oldest youth-oriented weekly, according to O'Bourke.
?It's sad when a business goes under,? he said. "It's always a bummer when people have one less thing to read."
O'Bourke, 28, has taken a position with the Herald as a features writer covering arts and culture.
