Student Cartoonists Win Awards

By: E&P Staff Four first-place winners were selected in the National Scholastic Press Association/Associate Collegiate Press Cartooning Awards, co-sponsored by Universal Press Syndicate.

The contest, which offers top prizes of $500, is open to high school and college students.

Winning the college editorial cartoon category was Conor Geoghegan of Mount Royal College in Calgary, Alberta. Geoghegan's cartoon used historical perspective to spoof bans on gay marriage.

Nate Creekmore of David Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn., received first place in the comic strip/panel category for showing a pair of volunteers using free chocolate and vanilla cupcakes to conduct an unofficial survey on race issues.

Winning the high school editorial-cartoon category was Julian Callos of Hoover High School in Glendale, Calif. Callos' drawing depicted Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator garb struggling to protect California from the threat of budget cuts.

And David Essman of Marquette High School in Chesterfield, Mo., received first place in the comic strip/panel category for a cartoon about seeking a date for homecoming.
