By: (AP) The student who wrote a controversial column in Winthrop University's student newspaper a week ago has left the school.
Twenty-year-old Christine Byington says she filed paperwork Tuesday to leave after considering her options last weekend at her family's Greenville home.
Byington told The Rock Hill Herald for Wednesday's editions that her decision had more to do with her whole semester than with the column that was published last week in the student-led weekly newspaper.
In the column, Byington criticized minority scholarships and organizations devoted to blacks -- arguing that equal treatment should be given to all races. Byington is biracial.
A university statement released Tuesday urged Byington to reconsider her decision.
