By: E&P Staff A new study released by CityXpress shows that online newspaper auctions generate walk-in traffic for businesses participating in the auctions. The company, which provides online marketplaces and e-commerce-enabled classifieds, surveyed 134 newspapers post-auction.
The study found that 30% of online bidders physically visited or contacted the business sponsoring an auction item. Fifty percent of them purchased or planned to purchase an item. The study also found that the majority of bidders -- 79% -- would participate in an online action again.
"This clearly reinforces that newspapers are the pre-eminent local source for advertisers in their communities," Phil Dubois, CEO of CityXpress, said in a statement.
The results are based on 12,708 bidders who responded to a post-auction survey conducted between January and June 2005. CityXpress hosted the auctions.
"During the auction, we saw an increase in traffic of about 1,000 visitors per day," said Scott Novak, online manager of The Sentinel in Carlisle, Penn. "Overall, the feedback from the community has been very positive."
