A circuit court judge has tossed out former Miami Mayor Xavier Suarez's suit against The Miami Herald, The Associated Press reported earlier this week.
Carl Hiaasen, a popular Miami columnist and author, had described the former mayor in a December 1997 column as `loony,' `deranged,' `crazy,' and `paranoid.' Florida Circuit Court Judge Amy Dean ruled that those terms were opinion and not presented as fact in the columns, essentially ruling in favor of the paper.
Dean also dismissed Suarez's allegations against former Herald political editor Tom Fiedler, who had also written about Suarez. The judge said Fiedler did not defame the ex-
mayor.
