Sumter 'Item' Announces Four-Day Furloughs

Posted
By: The company that publishes The Item of Sumter and two weekly newspapers is furloughing all of its employees for four days over the next four months.

Osteen Publishing General Manager Larry Miller says a long period of declining advertising revenues, especially from the real estate and auto industries, led to the furloughs.

The Item reported Wednesday that all employees will have to take four unpaid days off between now and the end of May. Workers at The Clarendon Sun and SumterCity Weekly are included.

Publisher Jack Osteen says aggressive cost cutting over the past year has kept the company strong. He says the newspaper survived the Great Depression and will survive this economic downturn.
