Sun Coast Media Group Buys Polk Weekly

By: The Frostproof News, one of Florida's smallest weekly newspapers, has been acquired by the Sun Coast Media Group.

The newspaper, with a circulation of a few hundred, was bought from Independent Newspapers, which publishes other small newspapers in southern Florida.

The Sun Coast Media Group publishes newspapers in central and southwest Florida. It plans to quickly expand the Frostproof News to two editions weekly by sharing stories and advertising with the group's other Polk County weeklies.

The acquisition was reported by Sun newspapers Thursday.

The Sun Coast Media Group's properties include the daily Sun editions in Charlotte, Englewood, DeSoto and North Port, along with the thrice-weekly Venice Gondolier. Earlier this year, the group acquired three Polk County weeklies from the Frisbie Publishing Co.
