By: E&P Staff Canadian newspaper group Sun Media, a subsidiary of Quebecor, launched online editions of 32 dailies this week, giving subscribers access to electronic versions of the papers with actual page layouts of stories, photos and ads. The e-editions, which were developed in cooperation with NewspaperDirect of Vancouver, can also be tailored for handheld devices such as the Blackberry or IPhone.
NewspaperDirect's SmartEdition e-paper solution is powered by PressDisplay technology. NewspaperDirect hosts the service, and handles payment, customer service management, and technical support.
E-edition readers can browse electronic pages and click on ads for more information. They can also ?download titles for offline viewing, listen to publications on their computers or mobile phones, share articles through email or their blogs, post stories on social networks, comment on articles and view picture galleries,? according to NewspaperDirect. Readers can also set up alerts to track their own interests.
Sun Media has developed e-editions for its all of its major urban dailies, as well as for other daily and non-daily titles. After a 14-day trial, newspaper subscribers can access the e-edition for a nominal fee, according to NewspaperDirect. Readers can access the group?s 24 Hours free dailies for free.
