By: E&P Staff Rafael Olmeda, a senior writer for the South Florida Sun Sentinel in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., has been elected president of Unity: Journalists of Color Inc. The umbrella group of minority journalists associations made the announcement Tuesday.

Olmeda, who is the immediate past president of Unity member National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), begins a two-year term in January.

Barbara Ciara, president of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), was elected vice-president of Unity, which organizes a quadrennial mass meeting of the four member associations.

Michaela Saunders of the Native American Journalists Association (NAJA) was elected secretary, and Jeanne Mariani-Belding, president of the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) was elected treasurer, Unity said. All will also serve two-year terms.

Olmeda, a former board member for Unity, is also an adjunct professor at Florida International University.

"I am very happy to be turning over the leadership of Unity to a committed and capable executive team, led by a strong president," departing Unity President Karen Lincoln Michel said in a statement." Rafael takes over the presidency at a critical time when Unity must expand beyond the perception that it exists solely to hold a convention every four years. Rafael is the leader who will take us there."
