By: E&P Staff The Sun-Times News Group (STNG) announced Tuesday that it has acquired CenterstageChicago.com, an online city guide.
"The acquisition is part of the Company's strategy to make Suntimes.com the premier online destination for all there is to know and do in the greater Chicago area," said the group, which includes the Chicago Sun-Times and a large number of dailies and weeklies in the Chicago market.
Fred Lebolt, vice president of new media for STNG, said Centerstage Chicago was ahead of its time in creating an online city guide, with user-written reviews that "make it truly an authentic online resource for the area."
"The depth and breadth of our reviews and listings make us the "go to" destination on the web for all things Chicago," said Mark Roth, co-founder and director of CenterstageChicago.com. "We are excited about the direction of the Sun-Times News Group and look forward to building our audience as part of their network."
STNG said the acquisition was one of a number of steps "designed to capitalize on new media opportunities to further enhance the company's and suntimes.com's position as the number one source of local news and information in Chicago."
In recent months, the group launched STNG Wire, a Web-based, 24-hour news and headline service used by other Chicago media outlets, and entered a news sharing partnership with WMAQ-TV/NBC5. It also recently made suntimes.com available on mobile devices.
