Sun-Times Media Group Weeklies Target Jittery 'Daily Herald' Employees

By: Mark Fitzgerald In an unusual ad campaign targeting employees facing what might be the first layoffs in the newspaper's history, the Pioneer Press group of weeklies is offering jobs to staffers of the Daily Herald in suburban Chicago.

"Attention Daily Herald Employees! We are hiring and want to meet you," reads the headline on an ad running now on Chicagojobs.com, an online site that is a partnership between the Sun-Times Media Group (STMG) and Shaw family-owned papers.

Pioneer Press is a group of 59 weeklies owned by STMG. The ad says the group "is seeking experienced reporters, classified and retail advertising account executives, sales assists, a business manager and pressroom and bindery personnel."

In July, the president and CEO of the Daily Herald's parent corporation Paddock Publications, told employees that everyone's pay would be cut 5% beginning Aug. 12, and that the paper intended to "permanently reduce payroll expense." At the time, President and CEO Doug Ray told E&P that could include involuntary layoffs, which would be a first for the family-owned paper, the third-largest daily in Illinois.

"Join us soon," the Pioneer Press ad tells Daily Herald employees, "and you will meet everyone at our company picnic or at our annual outing at Great America."
