By: E&P Staff The Chicago Sun-Times Tuesday published an 8-page Newspaper In Education (NIE) supplement about the First Amendment produced in partnership with the regional chapter of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).
The supplement was meant to coincide with the upcoming National Constitution Day, Sept. 18, and includes winning essays of a contest among junior high and high school students.
Winners of the contest, which asked students to write on the theme "How do you use the First Amendment in your everyday life?", will receive awards and scholarships at an Oct. 5 "First Amendment Freedom Award dinner honoring Sun-Times Publisher John Cruickshank.
The ADL, formed in 1913 to fight anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry, "has always been a strong defender of the First Amendment, especially on the issues of separation of church and state, and freedom of speech and religion," Lonnie Nasatir, the league's regional director for the Greater Chicago/Upper Midwest, wrote in an introduction to the supplement.
