By: E&P Staff The Chicago Sun-Times and the local NBC affiliate, WMAQ TV/NBC5, announced Thursday a partnership to share content and conduct joint news projects.
In many ways, the partnership is similar to arrangements local newspapers and TV news organizations have forged around the country. Sun-Times stories will be previewed on a "Tomorrrow's Headlines" segment on NBC5's nightly 10 p.m. newscast, and the stations stories will be promoted in the newspaper. The Sun-Times weather page will feature content from the TV station's "Weather Team."
But Sun-Times Editor in Chief John Barron said in the announcement that the paper and station will also conduct joint investigative projects, and will co-sponsor election polling and community events.
The partnership's first joint project debuts this Sunday in print and on the air. "Through the Eyes of a Killer" is a two-part series by Carol Marin and Don Moseley. Marin has conducted an interview with convicted murderer Patty Columbo--convicted with her much older boyfriend of killing her mother, father and younger brother in suburban Elk Grove Village in 1976 -- that will run in print, on television and online.
"This is a terrific opportunity for both the Sun-Times and NBC5. It allows each of us to bring what we do best to vastly larger audiences," Barron said in a statement.
"NBC5's partnership with the Chicago Sun-Times doubles the distribution potential for both of us," said Larry Wert, president and general Manager of NBC5.
The two began sharing content earlier this week when NBC5.com's live coverage of the huge immigration march in Chicago was also streamed on suntimes.com.
