By: E&P Staff A new Gallup poll taken in the past week and released today shows that two New Yorkers, Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani, continue to top voter preferences to gain their party nods for the presidency in 2008. But there are some new developments.
Sen. Clinton maintains a huge lead over Sen. John Kerry by 39% to 15%, with Al Gore now at 13% and John Edwards at 12%. A "hot" candidate, Gov. Mark Warner, now rests at 5%.
On the GOP side, former Mayor Giuliani pulls 33% with Sen. John McCain at 28%. The party's own "hot" candidate, Sen. George Allen, still lags far behind with 7% followed by Sen. Bill Frist at 6%.
One new twist: A fairly strong vote for Gore, who was not even listed in Gallup's previous ballot back in December. Perhaps because of that, Sen. Cllinton's showing fell from 43% to 39%.
On the GOP side, Gallup took Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice out of the race, as she did. She had gained 18% before. With her out, Giuliani climbed from 30% to 33% and McCain soared from 22% to 28%.
Gallup said it detected a gender gap in Clinton's support, as she gains 44% of the backing of women but only 33% from men.
Interestingly, Giuliani leads McCain 31% to 26% among self-described "conservatives."
