By: Staff Reports Johnson Steps Down After 14 Years
Jack Sweeney, associate publisher and president of the Houston Chronicle, has been named publisher of the newspaper, the Houston daily reports.
Effective immediately, Sweeney succeeds Richard J.V. Johnson, who will continue to serve as the newspaper's chairman. Johnson has been publisher for the past 14 years.
"Now in my 46th year at the Chronicle - and with our 100th anniversary coming up in 2001 - I felt this was an appropriate time for the announcement of my successor and for turning over the leadership of the paper to Sweeney," Johnson said to the paper.
Sweeney will retain his title as president of the Chronicle. Jack Leftis, who was associate publisher with Sweeney, will maintain his titles as editor and associate publisher under Sweeney.
The Houston Chronicle is a Hearst Corp. newspaper and has a paid weekday circulation of 553,462, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations.
