By: E&P Staff Cartoonist Nicole Hollander talks to the Chicago Tribune for a feature commemorating three decades of her strip "Silvia," which still appears six days a week in 17 newspapers via Tribune Media Services.
Hollander reflects on the character -- a combination of her mother and two of her mother's best friends, and women who lived on the Windy City's West Side who gave Sylvia what Hollander calls "a rough-edged, Chicago sense of humor."
She recalls that when she first approached a syndicate with the strip, she was told it was "deep but narrow," a comment she assumed meant "appealing to women."
"C'mon," she tells the Tribune, "Women buy newspapers."
