By: E&P Staff Syndicated columnist Leonard Pitts Jr. on Tuesday urged education and business leaders not to succumb to ?the analysis that leads to paralysis? and push to improve public education.
Speaking in Charlotte, N.C., The Miami Herald columnist -- who is syndicated through Tribune Media Services -- spoke to more than 200 people at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, where he discussed what he has learned over the years about educating low-income minority students.
?We already know how to do what we say we want to do,? Pitts said, according to The Charlotte Observer. ?What is missing is the vision. What is missing is the will.?
He added: ?What matters more than money is the willingness to get angry and stay angry at what happens to children.?
?What do you see when you see that poor black kid?? he asked the group. ?Do you see a kid who's going to be in the jailhouse in 20 years? Or do you see Barack Obama??
The nonprofit Mecklenburg Citizens for Public Education, or MeckEd, sponsored the appearance of the Pulitzer Prize winner, the Observer reported.
