By: E&P Staff Students at the Newhouse journalism school in Syracuse University, together with a community group launched a newspaper for the city's South Side neighborhood over the weekend.
The Stand is a joint project of the students and the Southside Community Coalition.
The first edition of 5,000 copies of the free monthly was distributed by high school students hired for the occasion at a launch party at a South Side community center Saturday.
Most content of the first print edition comes from student journalists, but that will change as community citizens are recruited and trained to write stories and take still photographs and videos.
The Stand is in the process of becoming a non-profit of the Newhouse school, but the plan is to turn it over to community individuals as a for-profit enterprise or to a group as a non-profit.
In a story in The Post-Standard in Syracuse, Maureen Nolan reported The Stand grew from a class assignment several years ago by Newhouse professor Steve Davis, who told students to create a newspaper of stories from the South Side, he said.
