Tabloid Format Paying Off for 'Independent', 'Times'

Posted
By: E&P Staff The new tabloid editions of London newspapers The Independent and The Times have generated improved circulation figures for the dailies so far this year, while growth at competitors The Daily Telegraph and The Guardian has slowed.

Overall circulation of the Independent, which launched its tabloid version last September, climbed 4.65% from December to January, to 248,876, according to a report in Mediaguardian.co.uk. An impressive 35% of households buy the tabloid version.

The Rupert Murdoch-owned Times, which debuted its tabloid in January, grew 3.83%, to 660,713, from December to January.

The success of the smaller formats for The Times and The Independent, which converted to all-tabloid for Saturdays beginning in late January, have slowed the growth of some rivals.

The Guardian and The Telegraph, both of which are considering tabloid versions but have yet to make the leap, showed more modest increases from December to January. The Guardian was up 3.84%, to 383,157, and The Telegraph was up just 0.35%, to 914,981.
