Tacoma 'News Tribune' To Trim Staff Through Buyouts

Posted
By: E&P Staff The News Tribune in Tacoma, Wash., will cut 18 of its 458 full-time employees, publisher David Zeeck announced on Wednesday. All but one will accept voluntary buyout deals. The remaining employee will be laid off.

The trim comes as the paper attempts to keep the paper profitable in spite of declining advertising revenues. The News Tribune had already let go 82 employees in July and plans to enact other expense reductions to keep the paper alive.

?The profit margin has been squeezed, but it still exists,? said Zeeck. ?That?s one of my three goals: to keep this newspaper in the black, prepare for the future and preserve as many jobs as we can.?

Four of the six full-time newsroom employees leaving the News Tribune are reporters. To adjust, the paper plans to use some of the remaining newsroom staff for reporting, said Executive Editor Karen Peterson.
