During an appearance at New York University in October, New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. and deputy executive editor for digital Ian Fisher were asked about the 100-person newsroom reduction ordered up this fall at the paper of record—its fourth editorial culling since the first such downsizing in Times history six years earlier. “I don’t want to say we’ve gotten used to it,” said Fisher, “but there’s some level where people understand we’re not the institution we used to be.
