By: Joe Strupp Frank M. Denton, The Tampa Tribune editor who joined the paper less than a year ago and guided it through one of Florida's worst hurricane seasons, will leave the paper at the end of December, he said Friday.
"I came to learn this just isn't a good fit for me," Denton said in a report on TBO.com, one of the paper's Web sites.
Denton, previously editor of the Wisconsin State Journal in Madison, said he is a finalist for a job that he declined to disclose. He said he could not pursue that job while remaining editor of the Tribune. His last day is Dec. 31.
Gil Thelen, Tribune publisher, thanked Denton in comments published Saturday, adding that he brought a "fresh eye" to the paper, as well as leadership during last summer's four major hurricanes, and that he helped diversify the newsroom staff.
"Frank is an accomplished editor and a valued colleague," Thelen said.
Janet Weaver, the paper's managing editor, will take on Denton's responsibilities on an iterim basis, reporting directly to Thelen. Weaver would not comment on Denton's departure, and Denton did not immediately return calls Monday.
"The Tribune is a very good newspaper with a terrific staff, and the Tampa area is very lucky to have it," Denton told TBO.com. "I wish them well."
