By: E&P Staff Tampa Tribune Executive Editor Janet Coats has outlined a new structure for her newsroom, according to a memo. "This is a flatter organization than the one we have now, one that relies less on bosses telling people what to do and more on personal responsibility," she wrote.
In the note, first posted Tuesday on Poynter's Romensko Web site, Coats says there are four groups that will make up the newsroom: News Leadership, Audience Editors, News Circles, and Finishing Circles.
Three managers at the top of the newsroom -- managing editor/print, managing editor/online and news director/television -- fall under News Leadership. The Audience Editors are defined as the "group responsible for setting daily coverage priorities" and will report to the News Leadership. News Circles consists of groups of reporters, editors, television and online producers, and visual journalists working to create stories across all platforms. The Finishing Circle group "act as advocates for the individual platforms."
