By: E&P Staff Gil Thelen, president and publisher of The Tampa Tribune, today announced that he plans to retire at the end of June 2006. His career spans 45 years in various executive positions at Media General and previously Knight Ridder.
?I made this decision some time ago,? said Thelen in a statement. ?I have three very important goals to attend to ? spending more time with my two boys and my wife Struby, investing my time and expertise in multimedia content/culture and organizational structures for media companies, and engaging more in my community.?
John Schueler, president of Media General?s Florida Communications Group, said ?Gil?s leadership has contributed to the success of our operations here. I?m pleased that he will be with us through a period of transition as we search for a successor, and we also plan to utilize his consulting services after he retires. We wish him all the best as he pursues his personal and professional goals.?
Thelen joined The Tampa Tribune in 1998 as vice president and executive editor and was named to his current position in 2003. Prior to joining Media General, he was vice president and executive editor at The State, a Columbia, S.C., daily.
