By: E&P Staff The Tampa Tribune on Tuesday celebrated the 15th birthday of its Web site, TBO.com.
On Aug. 11, 1994, the Tribune began publishing online at TBO.com, making it one of the first newspapers to have a dedicated Web site. Today, the Tribune claims that TBO.com attracts 3 million unique visitors each month with well over 20 million page views every month.
The paper was also one of the first to use video to enhance its news coverage. The site began using video in 1996 to cover Bill Clinton's re-election. Since 1999, it has shared TBO.com with local NBC affiliate WFLA-TV, which, like the Tribune, is owned by Media General.
In recent years, the site has undergone several changes and updates. In 2006, TBO.com launched a mobile site, m.tbo.com, which reached 800,000 page views last August.
"The biggest change in 15 years has been the growth of digital news ? first on the Web, and now on mobile and social networks," TBO.com Content Director, Loren Omoto, said in a statement. "We?re proud of the team that?s dedicated to the success of this 24 hour news service and that continues to work every day to make us Tampa?s No.1 source for breaking news."
