Tech Company Zuora Launches Paid-Content Solutions

By: Jennifer Saba A Silicon Valley company is throwing its hat in an increasingly crowded ring to enable publishers to charge for online content. Zuora in Redwood City, Calif., is launching Z-Commerce for Media and has already lined up two relevant clients, GigaOm and Reed Business.

Zuora, which describes itself as "the de-facto subscription platform in the technology industry," began providing billing and commerce capabilities for hosted services companies. "We do the billing, payments and collections," said Tien Tzuo, Zuora's CEO, who left salesforce.com to start the company in 2007. "What we have is really well-suited for the media industry."

The Z-Commerce for Media provides pricing plans, online content mapping tools to determine which premium content to charge for, subscription management and billing and payment methods.

"Zuora was one of the few solutions we found that really addressed the issue of subscription management and billing in a flexible and efficient way," Dan Olley, CIO of Reed Business, said in a statement. Reed is the publisher of Variety, which just announced plans to put some of its content behind a pay wall.

Zuora charges on a tiered subscription basis. The company has more than 100 customers.
